Connect4Learning incorporates formative assessment as a regular part of daily Small Group lessons, where teachers interact one-on-one with children and are able to closely observe each child. Small Group lessons include guidance on the skills to observe and the questions to ask to elicit children’s understandings. Math, science, and social-emotional learning objectives are addressed directly in the corresponding Small Group lesson with a formative assessment sheet.
Small group lessons with literacy learning objectives use the literacy formative assessment sheet, rather than a lesson-specific worksheet. This yearlong assessment tool focuses on each child’s overall understanding of concepts of print and genre, phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing development.
